HP Compaq 6720s looks and feels pretty solid. It's not really a consumer notebook thus is has no extra bells and whistles for media playback like a remote control or media buttons. HP Compaq 6720s made out of black and grey plastic and fits perfectly on my lap. There is enough space to rest your palms on while typing and it feels very solid (the screen can be twisted a little however). You really need to push hard on the lid in order for the ripples to appear.

The Core 2 Duo T5470 is the slowest of the new 800MHz FSB CPU’s but it's still really fast. The Intel Speedstep Technology changes the multiplier from 6x to 8x in order to maintain maximum performance and maximum battery time. The only thing this processor lacks compared to its faster brothers is a higher frequency, 2MB cache and Vanderpool Technology (hardware accelerated virtualisation). Windows Vista boot up time from the BIOS to the Windows logon screen is about 32 seconds. The hard disk is a Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00 which means it’s a 120GB SATA drive at 5400RPM with 8MB cache. Windows feels really snappy despite only 1GB of RAM but with one open slot I think I will upgrade to 2GB soon. I don’t play games on it but with integrated X3100 graphics you shouldn’t expect very much.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a laptop without any bells and whistles with low weight and a friendly pricetag then the HP Compaq 6720s is for you. If you want to play new games at a high resolution then this is not what you are looking for. I would totally recommend it to my fellow students as they always seem low on cash and shouldn’t be playing games at your university anyway.

Pros

* Excellent screen
* Long battery time
* Great multitasking
* Great value for money
* Well designed
* SD/MMC cardreader
* Stays cool

Cons

* Standard installation full of bloatware
* No recovery/Vista disks
* No FireWire/TV-out/DVI/HDMI
* Mono speaker

Dell vostro 1500 Battery

Dell vostro 1500 Battery has 2 options for types of battery : 6-cell or 9-cell. I have the 6-cell and it's more than adequate in terms of battery life, Dell vostro 1500 Battery 6-cell gave me 4.5 hours of life when idling with screen brightness set to 4/7 and with all wireless features on. In real world usage you'll get about 3 - 3.5 hours while doing work. If you're watching a movie with screen brightness on high you'll probably see more in the realm of 3 hours of battery life.

Dell vostro 1500 construction

Dell vostro 1500 is a beast in terms of having a solid feel. If you wrap your knuckles on this bad boy you're likely to end up with bruises.Dell vostro 1500 casing is very thick and rigid, it’s mostly magnesium-alloy in construction. This equates to a very solid system, but also a very heavy one. It’s one of the heaviest 15.4” laptops I’ve ever handled, and not really something I’d want to lug around in a backpack for long distances.

The hinges on the lid are very rigid, it’ll take two hands to open the screen – one to hold the base of the laptop the other to push open the lid. The good news is that the firm hinges mean you won’t get any wobble once the screen is open. The lid of the Dell vostro 1500 provides more than adequate protection for the screen.

One thing I don't like about the Dell vostro 1500 build quality is that the PC card slot uses a plastic insert filler instead of a more convenient flap to protect from dust when nothing is inserted. Those plastic dummy pieces always get lost.

I'd be very confident in Dell vostro 1500 holding up over years of usage, it simply feels like it was built to last.

Dell vostro 1700 ports

Dell Vostro 1700 have usual ports are there but nothing more than that. No DVI or HDMI output. However, considering the price range of Dell Vostro 1700, it would probably be unrealistic to expect more. One thing I find strange is that there is no port for a Docking Station, yet Dell markets Dell Vostro 1700 as a business model.

On the back of Dell Vostro 1700 there three USB ports, the modem connection and the S-Video output are here in addition to the power supply connection

On the left of Dell Vostro 1700 there wireless switch and the ExpressCard slot are here (note also the air vents mentioned before)

On the right of Dell Vostro 1700 busiest in the terms of connectors (and rather annoying if you are right-handed and use an external mouse) housing the headphones/microphone connections, DVD drive, 8-in-1 memory card reader, IEEE 1394 (Firewire), an external monitor output, Ethernet port and two more USB ports (to make 5 in total)

Dell vostro 1700 screen

Dell vostro 1700 screen use Widescreen XGA+ 1440x900 though higher resolution. Browsing through the web forums, it seems general opinion is that the Nvidia 8600M GT is not powerful enough to handle higher resolutions. I find the native resolution always much sharper looking so I stayed with the XGA+.

Dell vostro 1700 screen colors and Dell vostro 1700 screen brightness are more than adequate for a budget notebook (in fact, the brightness is excellent) and it is a real pleasure to play a game or watch a movie on a 17" screen. Certainly the initial experience is stunning when compared to a 14" or 15".

Dell vostro 1700 screen horizontal viewing angles are very good, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the vertical viewing angles. Couple of degrees up or down and most colors look differently.

HP Pavilion dv6500t

HP Pavilion dv6500t is very popular dv6000t series of mainstream laptops. HP Pavilion dv6500t use 15.4” widescreen, consumer-oriented laptop, it delivers a solid, well-rounded package that updates the HP lineup nicely.

I am pleased with the apparent quality of the HP Pavilion dv6500t, but only time will truly tell how it fares. HP Pavilion dv6500t case is plastic but feels solid, with the top a shiny black coated plastic and the base a more standard matte black. The area around the screen and keyboard on HP Pavilion dv6500t also has a shiny finish that reflects less than the top. HP Pavilion dv6500t screen flexes significantly under stress but I cannot produce any ripples in the screen. The hinges are solid and keep the screen in place. HP Pavilion dv6500t has flex, found in the case is under the optical drive in the center right of the base and a slight amount to the right of the touchpad. Nearly all ports are on the left; only a USB port, the optical drive, the express card slot, and the power connection on the right. The express card slot has a plastic placeholder rather than a true cover, but the media center remote is stored in this slot, anyway, so a cover would be superfluous. All vent openings are placed on the back and bottom. This arrangement does allow some of the vents on the bottom to be blocked without completely obstructing the air flow. The front lip holds an IR receiver, a microphone/line-in jack, and two sound output jacks.

The lighting on HP Pavilion dv6500t adds a very classy touch to the design. The row of media controls at the top of the keyboard glows an iridescent blue, as does a ring around the power plug when the AC adapter is connected. HP Pavilion dv6500t's media buttons are all touch sensitive and very responsive. A click sound accompanies a press, but this feature can be turned off in the BIOS. HP Pavilion dv6500t's mute button turns orange when activated, as does the icon above the touchpad when disabled via a hard button. HP Pavilion dv6500t's caps-lock and number-lock keys have blue lights beside each of them to indicate activation. Finally, three small lights in the bottom left corner show power, charging state, and drive activity.

The one big consideration in all of this shiny, fancy, coated plastic is how easily it can accumulate dust and fingerprints. A microfiber cloth comes standard, and neat freaks, including myself, will wipe down the top and area around the screen at least a few times a day.

Core 2 Duo T5470 Peformance on Dell Vostro 1500

Dell Vostro 1500 is great for gaming if you wish to modify it in that way. Dell Vostro 1500 has great processor, ram, and graphics card options. I have a 2.0ghz processor, 2gb of ram, and the 8600gt card. Dell Vostro 1500 can run all the games on the market right now and will do great with those to come. Some gaming notebooks with basically the same specs can run over $1600 and I only paid $1000 for Dell Vostro 1500.
Dell Vostro 1500is a powerhouse. Dell Vostro 1500 Performance cannot be beat for the price. The delivery wasn't as bad as I expected- it came about a week earlier than Dell's initial estimate.

HP Compaq 8510p comes with a WSXGA+ screen (1680x1050). HP Compaq 8510p screen is good quality, bright and easy to read. I had no dead pixels and did not detect much light leakage. I’ve been using the screen with brightness turned all the way up as it seems to produce the truest white color. One note, initially the "ambient light sensor" feature was enabled. Personally I find it disturbing to have the screen brightness constantly changing, especially because I was not aware of this feature at first and couldn’t figure out why my screen kept changing.

The HP Compaq 8510p Notebook PC gives you exceptional graphics and performance in a powerful yet portable 15.4-inch diagonal widescreen notebook.

The new Santa Rosa chipset is certainly an improvement over the Pentium M 755 laptop which died on me. The preconfigured unit came with 1GB RAM so for another $40 I added another 1GB Patriot dimm. (The benchmarks below are with 2GB RAM installed).

The ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2600 is a dedicated video card with 256MB ram. This is a new card and according to HP I have the newest drivers installed. However I’ve run into a few blue screens of death doing various operations. These seem to be video driver related as the ATI Catalyst software catches the errors before Windows does and allows you to stay in session.

I was able to run Bioshock with settings on "high." I detected a slight choppiness at times, but this could be due to my trackball being a insensitive or the slower 5400rpm hard drive. Games such as Pirates! and Civilization run with no problems.

HP Compaq 8510p has four USB 2.0 ports, VGA, HDMI, stereo microphone in, stereo headphone/line out, 1394a, power connector, RJ-11/modem, RJ-45/ethernet, docking connector, secondary battery connector.

HP Compaq 8510p comes with an 8-cell battery which, thankfully, does not protrude like the T61 battery. As mentioned above, in my informal test I played a 2h 10min DVD and had about 30 minutes left over for normal usage. I regularly get more than three hours of battery life during normal usage (Word/Internet/Photoshop). HP offers two additional batteries for this unit that SNAP ON to the base (good design idea). These are offered in 8-cell and 12-cell sizes, which effectively make your battery 16-cell or 20-cell.

dell vostro 1500 wireless card

Dell Vostro 1500 use Dell Wireless 1505, which features pre-N functionality.The wireless range on this card is fairly average, and it connects to most networks with ease. My recommendation, for compatibility, is the Intel Wireless card instead of the Dell wireless. t seems to be more compatible according to what I have read (the lower-end Dell cards also seem to have the same connection problems). I do, however, like the wireless switch on the left-hand side of the notebook. This switch allows control (configurable via the Dell software in Windows or through the BIOS) of the system’s internal wireless cards, including, if installed, Bluetooth, 802.11X, and any WWAN cards. This switch has three options: On, off, and a third, momentary switch, dubbed “Wi-fi Catcher.” This technology, if used while the system is off, will turn a small LED green if a wireless network is detected in range of the system within around five seconds.

The Dell Vostro 1700 is big and heavy, even for a 17" notebook. Dell Vostro 1700 is all black so it is difficult to argue whether it is pretty or not, but it is unlikely that one will find it ugly. On the other hand, stains and fingerprints get stuck on the black paint very easily and they are difficult to get rid of (see the backside image below where the fingerprints are clearly visible).

I opted for the Widescreen XGA+ 1440x900 though higher resolution is offered by Dell. Browsing through the web forums, it seems general opinion is that the Nvidia 8600M GT is not powerful enough to handle higher resolutions. I find the native resolution always much sharper looking so I stayed with the XGA+.

Note that all tests were run with the latest Nvidia released ForceWare drivers (162.22 for Vista, downloaded from www.laptopvideo2go.com). The Dell stock drivers performed so poorly (processing around 5 fps on the first 3DMark05 test) that I stopped on the first test and upgraded them.

Pros

* Price (considerably cheaper than all competitors for a similar config)
* Most components are customizable
* Good performance, both in business applications and gaming
* Solid build

Cons

* Long and unpredictable delivery times
* Very heavy and big, even for a 17" notebook
* Keyboard requires getting used to as it is different both from a desktop and from a typical 15" laptop
* Can get quite hot under a heavy load

HP Compaq 2510p

The HP Compaq 2510p is a 12.1" screen ultraportable notebook designed for business people that are frequently on the go. The HP Compaq 2510p replaces the older HP nc2400 ultraportable offering from HP. The HP Compaq 2510p improves upon the HP Compaq nc2400 by offering a touchpad, LED backlit display, the Intel Santa Rosa platform and a fresh new design look.

The HP Compaq 2510p is designed to go where you go without weighing you down. Our smallest notebook still comes with all the features to keep the ultra mobile - ultra-productive.

The HP Compaq 2510p starts at a price of around $1,549 from the HP.com business store and can be configured in various manners, though being an ultraportable you are somewhat limited in processor choice -- you can choose between the Intel U7500 or U7600 ultra low voltage processor. Integrated graphics is the only choice you'll have and the hard drive is a slowish 1.8" 4200RPM variety, so there's no path to a super duper performance system. Rumor has it SSD might show up as an option at some point for this machine though.

The performance isn't really what you're looking for in an ultraportable though. It's the utility factor and how capable it is for on the go work that matters with such a machine. The integrated optical drive, light weight, great screen, nice keyboard and overall good design will serve therefore serve as a focus in this review.

Dell Vostro 1500

The Dell Vostro 1500 is the small business equivalent of the Dell Inspiron 1520. This notebook, starting at less than $600, can be configured with anywhere from a Celeron M540 processor to a much faster Core 2 Duo 7500. Unlike the Dell Inspiron model, an AMD option is unavailable.

Configuration: (Total: $877)

* Intel Core 2 Duo T5470 (1.6Ghz)
* 1GB 677Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
* 120G 5400RPM Hard Drive
* nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, 256MB
* 8x DVD Burner with Double Layer capability
* 15.4” widescreen anti-glare screen (1280x800)
* Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
* Dell Wireless 1505 Mini-Card (Pre-802.11n)
* 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
* Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic

The design of this system is rather spartan, but also very professional with the solid black styling. It’s not flashy like a high-end gaming laptop would be, but it doesn’t look bad to my eyes. The LEDs have a nice saturated blue color, though Dell was inconsistent in the styling. Several lights, including the battery level LEDs, the CD drive LED, and the “Wi-Fi Catcher” LED are green. In addition, the low battery light is an odd shade of hot pink, which fits with nothing else in the system. While this is by no means a major functional concern, I would have preferred the colors to be more consistent. I also dislike the hot pink color the battery light turns when the battery reaches a low level.

The screen on the Dell Vostro 1500 is relatively ordinary. I opted for the anti-glare 1280x800, 15.4” resolution model. The vertical field of view on this screen can be described as poor at best, and I frequently find myself adjusting the tilt of the screen to match the way I’m sitting. The horizontal field of view is considerably better than the vertical, and I have no complaints. Even looking closely at the screen, I am unable to distinguish the “Dell noise” that some other reviewers have described. What does bother me, however, is this screen’s ability to attract dust. Cleaning the screen is an ordeal that has to be done frequently to remove the dust from the screen. I do not know if the glossy screen would improve this or not.

The Core 2 Duo processor is, simply put, awesome. The T5470 that was configured in my system was the slowest processor available in the Core 2 Duo variety, but it still performs tasks with great ease. When multi-tasking, the dual-core functionality of the system really shows what it’s capable of. Having run single-core processors up until this computer, the difference is amazing. It’s possible to do CPU-intensive tasks and still have a perfectly responsive computer at the same time, which is a welcome relief.

The Dell Vostro 1500 is a moderately powerful and relatively inexpensive system for businesses and home users alike. Its good build quality and good configuration options allow it to be an excellent and versatile machine for many different applications. Despite some design flaws, the Vostro 1500 is still an excellent machine.
